How Does Sudoku Work
Sudoku is the abbreviation of the Japanese phrase “Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru” which means “the digits must remain single”. It is a trademark of Nikoli Co. Ltd., a publisher of puzzles in Japan. Some publishers in Japan also called this puzzle as Number Place while non Japanese publishers spell the word as Su Doku.
The Sudoku puzzles numerals are used for convenience because they show irrelevant arithmetic relationships between numerals. You can use any distinctive symbol such as letters, colors, or shapes without altering the rules.
The puzzles are attracting people to play it not because of the simplicity of the rule but the reasoning incorporated in the solutions might be complex. In fact, it is recommended by teachers to their students as part of their logical reasoning exercise. The players can select the levels of difficulty. The puzzles are often available on published sources for free or custom generated using software.
The puzzles are created with a 9×9 grid divided into a 3×3 subgrids called regions. There are other terminologies for 9×9 grids such as blocks, boxes or quadrants. Some cells in the puzzles already contain numerals called givens or clues. The goal of the puzzle is to fill the remaining cells with numerals from 1 to 9 in each row, column and region without repetition. Each numeral solution should occur only once in each of three scopes and directions since single numbers are implied by the name of the puzzle.
It might seem difficult but the puzzle can be solved using three different strategies. Scanning, marking up and analyzing. It is allowable to set starting grids with more than one solution or set the grids without solution but this is not the proper way of answering Sudoku puzzles. It always requires a unique solution.
Creating Sudoku puzzle can be efficiently performed by players by pre-determining the locations of the givens and assigning values to them needed to make deductive progress. The undefined given can be assumed not to hold a particular value as long as it is given a different value before completing the construction.
Sudoku puzzles have different variations. The most commonly used is the 9×9 grid with having 3×3 regions. Other puzzle samples include the 4×4 grids having 2×2 regions, 5×5 grids having pentomino regions, 6×6 grid having 2×3 regions and 7×7 grid having six heptomino regions.
Published Sudoku puzzles are rank according to its difficulty. The numerals which are given do not always emphasize difficulty in solving the puzzles. It is easier to solve provided there is minimum number of givens. Average number of givens can still be very difficult.
However the puzzle’s difficulty relies on the positioning relevance of the givens rather than their quantity. The levels of Sudoku difficulty are divided onto four ratings which are easy, intermediate, hard and challenging. The audiences or players can choose from any of these levels to test their logical reasoning.
