Distance Learning Education
An overview of distance learning
Distance learning is fast becoming the choice for continuing education for working adults. Also known as online university, internet university, distance learning education, virtual college and other various titles, this educational path allows students to get an educational certificate or degree through an accredited institution or school on their schedule, even if it means taking classes and studying at two in the morning.
While distance learning can also talk about various learning courses available via mail, the rising popularity of the internet has pretty much rendered that method of distance learning a thing of the past. With just a desktop, internet connection and some desire, you can earn your degree online from the comfort of your home.
Distance Learning and it’s Advantages
The largest benefit of distance learning education is the flexibility you have, especially if you are already working full time and have a full load, kids or other “grown up” responsibilities. You can do your school work after hours or late at night, or view some class material on your lunch break or other breaks in your normally hectic day. The ability to work when the time is right for you is the main benefit of online school, and one of the main reasons to consider this kind of college education. Lower fees for online courses also makes many online schools more affordable than brick and mortar colleges or universites, giving another benefit to the working individual. Lastly, the ability to obtain a degree or a certificate, such as the paralegal certificate online, is another option you can consider.
Drawbacks of an Online Education
Being able to motivate yourself, and stay motivated, is very important when taking a distance learning course. Many people that are taking online coursework say that one of the things they miss is the student to teacher and student to student interaction that typically occurs at brick and mortar schools. Learning online requires that you be disciplined in scheduling your study time, coursework and meeting deadlines. Staying on task can be difficult for some, but it is very important simply because you do not have the instructor there to motivate you or hold you accountable.
The Two Types of Distance Learning
When dealing with distance learning education, there are two types of classes that you can choose from. There are synchronous courses and there are asynchronous distance learning classes. Synchronous learning is a bit more structured. You have class times, and you must attend those classes like you would a traditional school. The only difference is that you are attending class online, not in a physical classroom.? The learning and instruction takes place on a set schedule, and communication is through chat or instant messaging in real time. Asynchronous courses, however, give you more freedom. You do not have set class times, and you do not have to log in with the other students to attend virtual class. Most communication is through web chats, discussion boards and forums. It is the asynchronous courses that truly give you the freedom that many distance learning students require.
Making Your Decision
There are a number of distance learning institutions and universities that offer a number of options to get the degree or certificate you are after. After you decide on the degree or subject you wish to pursue, you should choose an online school that fits your learning style best and has a good name that people will recognize and associate with a quality education. You will also need to choose an online institution that is accredited so your degree is viewed in a good light by your future employers as well as other colleges and universities should you want to tansfer to another institution.
With a good head on your shoulders, and a degree in your chosen field, you can bolster your resume and land the job you desire in the field of your choice. Whether you are trying to get your masters, bachelors or doctorate degree, obtaining that higher educational degree will always be a positive.
