Each year thousands of college students choose to avoid the lecture hall and instead take advantage of the convenience of logging on to their computer to attend class. Online college courses are growing in popularity. Students love these courses and they want colleges and universities to offer more programs. Now distance learning college is not just for undergraduate students, many institutions also have graduate and masters programs online and these programs are getting rave reviews.

In the fall of 2008, 4.6 million students took online courses. That translates into a quarter of every college student taking at least one course online, a 17% increase from the year before. And these online learners want more choices. A study by the Sloan Consortium on online learning found 73% of students want their colleges and universities to offer more online programs.

What attracts students to online learning? Convenience. The student calls the shots. The student determines what time a class fits their schedule. Then when they are ready, they view the lecture, complete an assignment or take a test, all over the internet. They don’t even have to leave home. Online courses are ideal for a student who as to work to pay for school, for busy parents or professionals looking to add a degree. The online student does not have to rearrange their work schedule or their family time.

Due to the success of undergraduate online programs, more schools are now offering graduate and masters programs the same way. The Department of Education recognizes over 1,300 online masters programs and 320 doctoral programs. Like undergraduate students, online graduate students also have the flexibility to download lectures, complete assignments and take exams on their time.

Most schools that offer online courses to undergraduate students also offer graduate programs. The Sloan Consortium finds 65% have graduate courses and 44% have masters programs. A student can get a masters in psychology, nursing, engineering or education online. These online programs often have the exact curriculum as the school’s on campus classes and award the same type of degree.

The days of night school being the only option for working professionals who wanted to attend graduate school are gone. Online graduate courses allow working students to keep their current schedule intact and attend class when it’s convenient. Another plus, online learning may be less expensive than traditional classes. Students can take one course at a time or as many as they can handle.

Employers are warming up to degrees from online universities. Actually, according to the Sloan Consortium study, more chief executive officers and educational institutions consider online learning just as effective or better than traditional face to face learning. So online students can expect their graduate degree to command the same respect as a degree from a brick and mortar institution.
