You labored for several years in order to receive your B.A. and your M.A. You clocked many hours being clinically supervised. You studied vigorously and passed the oral and written exams. You are now a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. You completed the enormous task! That’s it, right? Not exactly. Each state board expects a certain number of continuing education credits to be earned during each renewal period. Does this mean attending a university again? Does this mean hours of classroom attendance at some campus? In short, no.

Continuing education has evolved over the years. CE for most is just a few mouse clicks away. The internet has made attaining CE units simple, quick and convenient. Fortunately, most states will allow up to half, if not more, of the total required CEUs to be earned from internet based providers. This means that some are still required the old fashion way, attending live presentations. The shift in trends from in-person classes to online training will continue as the internet grows and develops further.

The current trend is to travel less and get more done online. This is seen with the various ads for “GoToMeeting”, or “GoToMyPC”, etc. The use of one’s time and monetary resources are being scrutinized. Online tools are providing solutions. The expectation to travel to another city every time a meeting is required or more training is needed is being diminished. Not abolished yet, but diminished significantly.

So, now lies ahead the task of selecting the right online CE provider. Online providers will differ in many crucial areas, such as, their state and national approvals, their overall format, their pricing structure, and their level of customer service. In order to select the right choice have these areas in mind and ask the following questions of each provider.

Does the provider have approval to offer MFT CEUs in my state?
Is their website user-friendly? Can I find what I need quickly and easily?
How does their pricing compare with the industry average?
What are the options if a problem arises? How can I get my questions answered?

All of these questions would be good to ask of each provider you are researching. Write the answers down for each provider on a separate sheet of paper. Then compare your notes to determine which one is right for you. This will require more effort and time on your part in the beginning, but can save you time and money in the long run. Not all providers are on the same level. This analysis will benefit you for years to come. Your license renewal will come up over and over again.
