There are a multitude of awards available that may help pay for some, or all, of a student’s education. Although somewhat time-consuming, knowing how the process works and adhering to deadlines could make all the difference to a student who needs help paying for school.

For most educational financial assistance, regardless of the origin, the first step is often filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Online students attending an accredited online college are eligible to apply for FAFSA money. The form can be found online and universities, colleges, loan companies, and foundations that award grants and scholarships use it to determine eligibility. The form is lengthy and can take up to a few hours to fill out, but the possible assistance that may be gained from a few hours of your time is well worth it.

FAFSA deadlines are critical and must be followed exactly. The deadlines differ depending on a number of criteria. Online schools and regular colleges may each have their own particular deadline date; it may or may not be the same as the FAFSA deadline, which is the 30th of June of each year. Each student should refer to the website of their school for application dates; some schools require the FAFSA to be completed as early as January.

Once your FAFSA application is completed online, you may need to make corrections or clarifications. The deadline for corrections is midnight on September 15th of each year. Online students must adhere to the same schedules as students at traditional colleges do, but they must also follow their own school’s timetable.

When you are ready to fill out the FAFSA, make sure you have set aside a few hours and taken the time to get all of the required paperwork together. In addition to a driver’s license and tax forms, W-2s are also needed, as well as your social security number. A student needn’t worry about finishing the deadline all in one sitting. When a student registers on the FAFSA website, they are assigned a personalized PIN that allows them up to 45 days to finish. Even though you have up to 45 days to finish, waiting until the end to submit your application could be taking a chance with your application. As the June 30th deadline nears, traffic is extremely heavy and it may be difficult to gain access. If you can’t log on in time, you will have to wait until the next application cycle to apply for aid, possibly losing a whole year. Online college students should be sure to make all of the same applications as other university students, because they are eligible for most of the same programs that other students qualify for.

By being meticulous and careful, students participating in online college programs can have the same opportunities for financial aid as other students. Being sure to find an accredited online school, checking deadlines, and submitting applications on time may mean that part, or even all, of your school can be paid for by scholarships and grants.
